ELNEC Graduate Curriculum

This curriculum is designed to help students in Master’s and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs become more knowledgeable about the importance of quality palliative care for all patients with serious illness and their families. The six modules in this curriculum are designed to help the student meet the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) G-CARES primary palliative care competencies, which all graduate-level nursing students should achieve by graduation. Palliative care is an essential component of graduate nursing education. Those who are becoming advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) will have the responsibility of providing primary palliative care to their patient populations wherever they practice. Those who will be working in an indirect care role (i.e. administration, education, research or public policy), must be prepared to advocate for access to palliative care services for the seriously ill, across the life-span and in all settings. Throughout the curriculum, the role of the advanced practice nurse (APN) refers to all graduate-prepared nurses working in a variety of settings. Advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) refers to the graduate-prepared nurse, either at the master’s or DNP level, who is providing direct patient care in either a clinical nurse specialist or nurse practitioner role.
